We take comfort in numbers...
Over the past month I have found this statement to be extremely true. I have also noticed it seems to justify wrongdoing: ones view of their "bad deed" goes from wrong to ok. Along with that, I think this depends on who the "numbers" are.
There are certain things the Bible clearly states are wrong, and then there are the hazy subjects. However, with the hazy subjects it is usually fairly obvious that they are wrong. So, say someone does something that's a bit sketch, but it's not clearly wrong. Well, most people with a fairly strong moral compass would feel quite bad. That is, until they look around them. When someone sees a fellow "good" person has done the same, or similar, wrong, they tend to justify their wrong and blow if off as nothing.
I think that this is a very interesting concept. We think something is wrong until we find other "good" people have also done it. Once it is clarified that "good" people do wrong too it is ok.
In essence, the action is justified by numbers...and comfort is found.
